Subject overview:

KS3 Art and Design is a two-year course designed to engage, inspire and challenge students, providing them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Students use sketchbooks to record, research, refine and present their ideas and combine these techniques to produce informed and exciting personal works in clay, pastel, paint, print and mixed media.

Year 7:

Autumn Term: Develop a basic understanding of the formal elements through the theme of ‘Natural Form’. Record observations and ideas in sketchbooks exploring the elements of line, colour & tone.

Spring Term: Strengthen the Basic Skills topic by using a range of materials and techniques to increase their proficiency in the handling of materials. Create work in mixed media based on the theme of study.

Summer Term: Explore and record the use of ‘Symbols, text and urban imagery’. Analyse and evaluate the work of others to strengthen their personal link. Ink, prints & paintings.

Year 8:

Autumn Term: Develop an understanding of culture and art whilst recording appropriate ideas and observations. Investigation to inform a meaningful 3D final piece.

Spring Term: Demonstrate analytical and cultural understanding through artist research based on a chosen theme. Develop personal ideas that build on contextual studies.
