The 'Year 8 Cafe' project is a regular feature of the school's curriculum and involves language learning, an appreciation of different cultures, an
experience of a real-life careers opportunity and involves all year 8 students. The Year 8 Cafe involves two of the three MFL taught and this year involved Spanish and German. The Year 8 Cafe involves the following:
• students are taught the topic of food and transactional speaking in the target language
• dialogues are planned in lessons
• students are trained as chefs, waiters or a 'maître d'hôtel' and learn specific vocabulary for their role
• students create invitations, in the target language, to members of staff
• the 'cafes' are held over a period of several days by groups of students from the year 8 Spanish and German classes during lunchtime
• staff order food and drink in the target language from the year 8 waiters, staff are served food and drink by year 8 students
• staff have prompt cards in the target language to help them out!
