1. What route did you take after school (i.e. university, apprenticeship, job etc.)

I received an unconditional offer to study Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham.

At the start of second year at university, I was elected Vice-Chair of the Modern Foreign Languages Society. During my role, I helped to organise various educational and social events for Birmingham languages students including Stammtisch and the MFL summer ball.

I am currently in my third year studying French, German and ab initio Spanish.

2. What are you doing now?

I am currently on my year abroad in a little town called Mayen in the west of Germany. I am working for the British Council as a foreign language assistant, teaching English in a German secondary school.

In March, I will then be moving to Seville in Spain to complete a work placement for Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, teaching English to adults in a specialist language school.

Over the summer, I intend to study an intensive French language course in Montpellier.

3. How Hanley might have helped

During my time in sixth form, I was able to volunteer some of my free study periods to help out in key stage 3 German lessons. This opportunity allowed me to develop my language teaching skills which I now use today in my role as a foreign language assistant in Germany.

Special mention goes to Mrs Burrows, Miss Hopkins, Mrs Mainwaring and Mrs Berthold for all of their German and French wisdom and for inspiring me to study languages at university.

After school I embarked upon a Level 4 Apprenticeship

I work as an apprentice trading underwriter at Aviva. This involves looking at a businesses insurance proposal and deciding if this is something that I would want to insure. Assessing the terms, levels of coverage and premium to offer. I have been working here for 2 years with one year left of my apprenticeship course. I am now a level 3 qualified insurance practitioner, working towards my level 4. I have also completed my Certificate in insurance, and I am working towards my Diploma. I have achieved this through doing exams and coursework on topics such as insurance law, business and finance. This is a fast -paced industry as the market is always changing depending on what is going on in the world.
