Hanley Castle High School is delighted to report the outcome of its most recent Ofsted inspection, and a copy can be viewed from the "About HCHS" tab. The school has been judged as “Good” in all areas under the new, tougher framework introduced in September 2012.
The May 2013 report highlights many areas of strength. The inspection team was particularly impressed by the good progress that students make at the school. The proportion of students gaining five or more GCSEs at A*-C, including English and Mathematics, is consistently well above the national average. English and Mathematics came in for particular praise, with teaching judged to be “always good and often outstanding”.
One area where the school was judged to have improved dramatically is in the quality of its sixth form.
The inspection team attributed the recent rapid increase in sixth form numbers to the very high quality of teaching, to students’ outstanding attitudes to learning, and to students’ success in gaining places at Oxford, Cambridge and other top universities.
However, this excellent teaching is not just confined to sixth form lessons or to English and Mathematics. The report highlights outstanding teaching in a range of other subjects, from science to drama, PE and music. Inspectors were particularly impressed by the variety of activities in lessons, and the use of Information Technology.
The report also focuses on the students of Hanley Castle. At a time when young people come in for so much criticism it is extremely pleasing to see our students singled out for their “exceptionally positive attitudes to learning”. In fact, the excellent behaviour of students is highlighted throughout the report. Students get on well with each other and with staff because they are “polite and well-mannered”.
Inspectors also commented on the very good leadership and management of the school. A number of areas were singled out as outstanding, particularly the arrangements made to support students making the transition from primary school and the impressive number of overseas study visits and student exchanges – from Sweden to Tanzania and now even China.
Two areas upon which the school is already focussing are differentiation and marking. Although these are minor concerns in the report, we are working to ensure that the activities planned in every lesson are accessible for students of all abilities, and that feedback to students always supports the best possible progress.
The school broadly welcomes this new, more rigorous Ofsted framework. It is a pretty brutal regime, but we judge ourselves against high standards, and were delighted that the strengths of the school and its students were recognised. However, the style of the new reports is rather brief and impersonal. It is the warmth of relationships between staff and students, combined with excellent teaching and a wealth of opportunities beyond the classroom, which make Hanley Castle so special.

| Ofsted inspection - update to parents and students |
| |
| Our two day inspection went smoothly and we feel that inspectors gained a fair and positive impression of the school in the short time that they were amongst us. We are grateful to parents for the very high number of reponses to Ofsted's online survey, and to students for conducting themselves so magnificently. We are expecting a draft report early next week to check for factual accuracy, with the final report being issued in the next couple of weeks. |

| Charity Rugby Match Triumph |
| |
A big thank you to all 14 members of staff directly involved in last Saturday’s charity rugby event. Also to those who gave up their time to support us.
So far, we estimate that the day will raise in excess of £500 for cancer charities, in particular the Coventry oncology centre which offered such help to Ray Gidley during his illness. The figure will hopefully rise above £500 when other sources are factored in. For the record the men's team won 53-17, only the 2nd time we have won the Crest Insurance trophy. The female staff team were also victorious- a surprise, hard earned win over our excellent girls team.

| Welcome Back - Suzhou Language School Return to Hanley |
| |
We are delighted to welcome our third visit from the teachers and pupils of the Suzhou Foreign Language School, near Shanghai in China.
21 students, aged between 11 and 13, and 2 teachers (Diana and Luna) arrived last Sunday, 14th April, and will be with us for the whole of the summer term.
Suzhou is an international school and so some of the students are from Korea and Taiwan, most of them speak a little English too.
Throughout the week they come into lessons with their “buddy” who is one of our pupils and experience a full timetable. In addition they receive lessons from their own teachers.
Regular weekly visits have been arranged to local sites of interest including: Cadbury World, West Mid Safari Park, The Gower Peninsula, Welshpool Steam Valley Railway, Oxford and The Forest of Dean for canoeing.
A busy half term week has also been organised with a whirlwind tour of the UK taking in: London, Lego land, Canterbury, Cambridge, Warwick Castle, Stratford, The Black Country Museum and The Lake District. (Phew!)
Our grateful thanks to Mrs Jane Eaton who is helping to coordinate this wonderful opportunity for the Hanley Castle High School community.

| Hanley Run - Cold but Fun! |
| |
The Hanley Run 2013 was held on the last day of the Spring Term, March 28th
On a very cold day, 449 runners from across the school took part in the race which covers 2.75 km around the local lanes, footpaths and bridleways.
The first six girls and the first six boys from each tutor group in Y7 and Y8 and the first three girls and first three boys home from the Y9 tutor groups have their finishing positions combined to work out the overall college champions.
The lower the score the better:
First Place: Gilbert 986 points
Second Place: Horton 1061 points
Third Place: Burley 1282 points
Everyone who completes the course scores a point in a separate participation competition. It was extremely close: Horton came first with 155 runners and Gilbert second with 154 runners completing! Burley had 134 completing the run this year.
The full results listings are in the Sports Hall.
Next year’s race will be held on Friday 11th April 2014, let’s hope for a warmer day!

We were delighted to hear that eight of our finest swimmers took part in a local Rotary Club charity event on Sunday 17th March, in Worcester.
Participants were aiming together to swim the total distance of the River Severn, some 227 miles!
Between them our eight pupils clocked up a staggering 836 lengths, which is the equivalent of 13 miles. Ben Holmes (SG8) swam the furthest of our group clocking up 212 lengths.
Over £225 of sponsorship money was raised to support the supply of fresh drinking water to a clinic in Makunka, Zambia.
Thanks to Mr R York our student teacher in the PE Dept for his support of this event and to all of our team: Ellie Draper (64 lengths); Georgia Ferguson-Walker (128); Kayleigh Barr (128); Amy Whittaker (80); Anna Sharpe (64); Katy Lewin (128) and Jess Dawson (32)

| KS4 Girls Rugby 8 a side Champions |
| |
On the 14th March two girls’ 8 a side rugby teams headed off to Sixways Stadium for our first ever girls tournament. The atmosphere was great, filled with excitement as well as competiveness!
Both teams played exceptionally well, the KS3 team finished in 2nd place in their pool games, winning against Blessed Edward 5-4, and narrowly losing 6-5 to Alvechurch A. They then went into the “Ball” Pool playoffs, beating Alvechurch B 9-2 and Blessed Edward 10-2, to win a brand new rugby ball.
However, greater things were about to happen to the KS4 team. In the early round robin stages we won all of our games, beating Evesham A and B and Tudor Grange Academy. Then in the final match we again came up against Evesham A. After some great tries and teamwork we managed to edge a tight win, 5-4 to win the trophy.
The players of the tournament were awarded to Chloe Sharman, Ellie Carolan, Saffron Cresswell and Laura Thomas, however everyone played exceptionally well.
Thanks to Miss Barnes and Mr York for taking us!

| |
As part of our continuing involvement with the Hanley’s village sculpture project we were delighted to be invited to participate in a studio visit and workshop. The sculptor, Michael Scheuermann organised a workshop for some of our year 10-13 students to participate in on Monday 4th March. Students saw the sculpture in progress; Michael talked through designs, developments, alterations to the final design and how a commission works in practice. It was fantastic that we were able to actually have a go at chiselling and carving into the final sculpture, whilst witnessing the skill Michael displays in his work. Seeing a working studio space was also an exciting opportunity that our students thoroughly enjoyed. We look forward to seeing the final sculpture behind the pond in Hanley Swan sometime in April 2013.

Having undertaken a wonderful opportunity to visit Tanzania last summer our pupils have been giving talks to some of the groups that supported their work. We received this delightful email from Mr J Boardman on behalf of the Upton Deanery Synod.
"Last year we were approached by Rory Owen and George Badger to sponsor them in their effort to raise funds for the Tanzania project....last night at a meeting of the Synod, these two young men gave a most professional and mature presentation of the trip to Tanzania. We were left in no doubt what a deep and humbling impression the visit had made to their lives; something that will stay with them probably for the rest of their lives."
Congratulations to the Rory and George on this marvellous endorsement and our thanks once again to Mrs Stock for organising the trip. |

| Jai Bolton (10KS) Elected to UK Youth Parliament |
| |
At the weekend we received the excellent news that one of our Y10 students and active member of the School Council, Jai Bolton has been elected as Member of the Youth Parliament for West Worcestershire. Jai attended a session at County Hall in Worcester on Saturday to receive the news.
Each local authority is able to elect MYPs to represent them at the Youth Parliament (UKYP) which was launched at the House of Commons in July 1999 with the aim of giving a voice to young people across the United Kingdom. Currently there are around 500 Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs). Worcestershire has only 3 places for young people, who are elected from the constituencies of North, East and West Worcestershire. Over 5000 people voted in the elections this year.
The UK Youth Parliament works closely with both national and regional government to provide opportunities for young people to have their views heard and acted upon. Consequently as well as working on nationwide projects, Jai will also be working alongside the Worcestershire Youth Cabinet to ensure that the voices of Worcestershire’s young people can be heard at the highest levels of government.
MYP’s attend regional meetings around every six weeks and there is also an Annual Sitting, held in July, where MYPs from all over the country come together to take part in a variety of discussions and activities and to agree their priorities for the year ahead.
Congratulations to Jai and many thanks to all students who supported him by voting before half term. We’re very proud to have a Hanley Castle student representing the views of young people across the region.
Jai’s manifesto can be read below in which he outlines the key issues on which he fought his campaign.
Why would you be a good Member of the Youth Cabinet?
Who am I? I care enough to represent and do my utmost for you; I am one of you! I am going to ensure that what you think, what you need is received and understood. I am very enthusiastic. I can communicate well and listen attentively. Teamwork is crucial and I believe if we work as a team we will achieve anything together. I am experienced in voicing young people’s views as I am on my school council. Vote for me and together we will move forward into a more positive future. You deserve to be heard.
Because you matter!
If elected, my main issues would be:
1. I want to provide a clearer charging system for bus fares, improve bus times and provide discounted charges for everyone in full time education. Doesn’t every student deserve to get there on time?
2. We all deserve to be safe, even online! I promise to raise the awareness of cyber bullying and provide support for victims as we all don’t have the information we deserve.
3. Do you want to walk on rubbish? I don’t! I want to clear up the streets and provide more bins where they’re needed.

| Radio DJ, Simon Mayo, to visit the school |
| |
We are extremely excited to announce a visit from author and radio presenter, Simon Mayo, on Wednesday 20th March.
We have invited Simon in as part of our efforts to promote positive reading and literacy. He will be coming into school to launch his second book, ‘ITCH ROCKS ’. During his visit, Year 7 and 8 students will be invited to hear Simon give a reading of his book and discuss the novel with a Q&A to follow.
Simon Mayo presents ‘Drivetime’ on Radio 2 and can also be heard chatting about films with Mark Kermode on Radio 5 Live. Previously Simon worked on BBC Radio 5 Live after a successful 15-year career on BBC Radio 1. Simon's TV work has included presenting Top of the Pops, the dilemma show, ‘Scruples’ and he is the new face of ‘Blockbusters’, to name but a few.
The event starts at 10.00am and we have also invited other local schools. Students can purchase a signed copy of either, of both of Simon’s books on the day with a 25% discount by collecting a pre-order form from the school library. Thank you. Anne Bridgens (School Librarian)

| Successful Swedish Exchange over February Half Term |
| |
We are pleased to say that the Swedish exchange went with a real swing during half term and our fourteen pupils were magnificent ambassadors for HCHS. Piles of snow and temperatures well below freezing made for a magnificent back drop as we ice skated, skied and watched professional ice hockey. We also led lessons in our host's school and the local primary school and spent time with our Swedish host families.
This was the culmination of a six year parnership that has seen three exchange programmes visit the Hoga Kusten School near Kramfors in Central Sweden and gives our pupils a wonderful opportunity to experience family life in a different culture. |

| Hanley's Big Dig Talk - Sunday, 24 February |
| |
On Sunday 24th February, the school will be hosting archaeologists from Worcestershire Archaeology who will be revealing the results of the Big Dig which took place in Hanley Castle in Autumn 2012. The dig involved many members of the local community, including Malcolm Fare and the Hanleys’ Village Society, as well as some pupils from Hanley Castle High School. A wealth of finds, many of which dated from the Roman period, were discovered and the talk next Sunday will provide the results of the analysis which has been taking place since October.
The talk will take place in the school hall from 2pm – 4.30pm and is open to all members of the public. Refreshments will be provided.
If you would like any further information about the day, please contact Mr Mainwaring.

All members of the Hanley Castle High School community were very upset to learn of the death of Alistair Booth , formerly our Business Manager.
Alistair joined the school in February 2007 and quickly established himself as a caring and talented leader of the non-teaching team. He was a man who brought principled professionalism to everything he did, through his management of the school finances, his leadership of staff and the highly positive relationships he built with so many of our partners and friends beyond the school. Alistair was a central player in our conversion to academy status, and his legacy can be seen in every aspect of the school’s work.
Alistair never saw his role as a narrow one, and spent many hours supporting and caring for members of staff and children who needed a friendly face or help of any kind. He was a true gentleman, and our thoughts are with Wendy and his family at this very sad time.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, 20 February at 2.00pm in Little Malvern Priory. The family has asked for donations in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association and/or St. Richard's Hospice c/o the funeral directors - FW Spilsbury, 12 Upper Howsell Road, Malvern, WR14 1TL |

During renovations to the accommodation for Aspire@Hanley, a number of archaeological “findings” have come to light.
Firstly, a packet (empty) of Wild Woodbine Cigarettes dating from World War Two, approximately. And secondly, a hand written note from Martin Richards which was hidden at Christmas in 1971. Martin states on the note that his date of birth was 1st March 1955.
We would be delighted to hear from Martin, and can promise that there will be no detention as a result of his actions!

| Hanley Pupils Keep on Giving |
| |
In an amazing spirit of giving our pupils raised just short of £3,500 on the last day of the autumn term for the "Cheeky Monkey" charity. The money raised goes to support children with cancer, helping to improve their lives and those of their carers. The non uniform, fancy dress day, was themed "Heroes and Villains". Each tutor group tried to cover each letter of the alphabet, so we saw the "A Team" next to the "X Men".
We have now raised in excess of £7000 for Cheeky Monkey over the last few years.
Our thanks to Mr S Cook for his encouragement and organisation of the event and to our parents and supporters for also giving so generously. |

It is with great sadness that the school heard of Ray's death on 21st December. Ray had been an inspirational and much loved member of staff for many years, and will be remembered fondly by staff and generations of students. Despite being diagnosed with a brain tumour in April 2011, Ray remained a close friend of the school with dignity and incredible humour. He served as president of Upton Rugby Club and his contribution to rugby was recognised with the Unsung Hero award at the Malvern Hills District Sports Awards in September. Our thoughts are with his family at this devastating time.
Ray's funeral was held at Upton church on Wednesday 9th January at 1pm. |

On Friday the 12th October we played host to the local Primary Schools Cluster Football Tournament. Many of our older pupils helped out with refereeing and organisational duties as we hosted nearly 75 youngsters, their teachers and many of their parents.
It was a beautiful autumnal afternoon and the spirit and tenacity of all of the players and the encouragement from the sidelines, filled the air with excited chatter and the thrill of winning and losing. Welland Primary came out on top this time, but it was mighty close as they scraped the win on goal difference!
Sport at our local primaries is such an important catalyst for bringing the community together and here at the high school we are delighted to be able to provide the facilities and centre for so many wonderful young athletes from across the catchment and beyond to participate against one another. In a year of wonderful national sporting achievement how marvellous it is to reflect on the burgeoning talent of the young people around us.
Throughout the year a coordinated programme of sporting activities will see many of our cluster primary pupils participating in activities organised at HCHS, we look forward to welcoming them. |
