Subject overview:

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical area of the curriculum provided through three subject areas; Food Preparation and Nutrition, Product Design and Textiles. Using creativity and imagination, the two year KS3 course is taught on a rotational basis enabling pupils to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

Year 7:

Product Design and Textiles.

  • Generate creative ideas.
  • Explore a wide range of materials, techniques and processes.
  • Research and explore the study of different cultures
  • Select and use specialist tools, techniques, processes and equipment.
  • Gain an understanding of industrial practices.
  • Analyse existing products and the work of past and present professionals.
  • Test, evaluate and refine ideas.
  • Create outcomes, realising intentions.

Food Preparation & Nutrition / Healthy Living

  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health
  • Cook predominantly healthy, savoury dishes to feed a family

 

Year 8:

Product Design and Textiles.

  • Develop specifications to suit needs and wants
  • Become more competent in a range of construction and decorative processes using more complex making skills.

Food Preparation & Nutrition / Healthy Living

  • Have a deeper understanding of the source, seasonality and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients
  • Become competent in a range of cooking techniques using more complex ingredients.
