What is the Course?

The world is becoming increasingly dominated by the use of Information Technology, which influence every aspect of our lives and play an important role in education and business. Students who wish to specialise further in IT or enjoy using Information Technology for leisure and to support their learning, should definitely consider the Tech Award in IT.

Recent government reforms in education have meant there will no longer be a standard GCSE in ICT. All schools going forward, will have to select a different course for Information Technology, and we believe the Technical Award will help provide students with both the creative and technical skills to be active participants in an exciting and dynamic world in both future work and study.

What will I learn?

This course covers a wide range of topics and skills to help prepare students for how IT might support a number of environments. The Eduqas Technical Award will also challenge all learners, including high attaining learners, by introducing them to material and techniques; encouraging independence and creativity and providing tasks that engage with many aspects of the Curriculum.

“Are you passionate about technology? Do you like solving problems? Are you curious about all things digital, and want to learn some fantastic new skills? If so, it’s time to uncover your potential – find out more about this exciting qualification today!”

Three themes are covered:

  • Information Technology in Society
  • Information Technology in Context to create a range of digital products
  • Project Management Skills

Students will begin studying towards the first part of the course during Year 9. This broadening of skills will to allow them to maximise their achievement within the subject and learn the underpinning theory for exam work. In Year 10/11, students will go on to study further units, which will allow them to complete the Award.

How will I be assessed?

60% Controlled Assessment

40% External Exam

When will I be assessed?

Unit 1 (On-screen Exam) – assessment date: Summer of Year 11

Unit 2 – possible assessment date: Spring of Year 11

PLEASE NOTE: these assessment structures and schedules are subject to change.

Additional Information

PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO STUDY BOTH THE VOCATIONAL AWARD IN ICT AND THE GCSE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE.

Important Note: There is a significant degree of reform at the moment in the education system. It is possible that this qualification may change in structure during the course of the next three years. In the unlikely event that these changes made it unsuitable for our students to pursue, we may look to swap them onto an alternative Level 1/2 (GCSE equivalent) qualification in Information Technology in order to better meet their needs.

What will this qualification allow me to do?

A detailed knowledge of Information Technology is a requirement of virtually any job or career. Even those students who do not wish to pursue a career as a specialist in Information Technology will still need to have a good all round knowledge of the subject. Completing the Tech Award, is a way of showing future employers, colleges and universities that you can work through a wide range of Information Technology problems and have a good all round awareness of different software applications.
